Large parrot; body length 78-90 cm, tail 31-47 cm; Weight 950—1700 g. Very similar to red ara. Has a beautiful, bright color. The main color is dark red, the wings are blue-green. The cheeks are not ahead of the white color, the naked face is decorated with small red feathers located in several rows. The tail and the bangs are blue. Soloine bonds with a black tip, and a sulfate-black connection.
Lives in Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Argentina and a number of other countries of South America.
High -barreled tropical forests inhabit both in plain and mountainous areas. Birds are usually held in pairs. Behave carefully, it is difficult to notice them in the foliage of trees. Fly well, developing speed up to 60 km/h. Have excellent vision and hearing. Climb trees well. Active in daylight hours, and in hot hours they rest in the crown of trees.
They feed on plant foods, mainly walnut nuts. They fly daily on river orpower shallows, where they lick red clay. Until now, the exact cause of this behavior has not been established. It is suggested that, thus, birds neutralize toxins contained in unripe fruits. Sometimes they cause significant damage to corn plantations.
Nest in hollows of old trees and often bring the hollow to the required size with their beak. There is no nesting litter in such a hollow. In the masonry usually 2-3 eggs. Running lasts 29 days.
Quite calm birds, often contain them at home in which they feel good. Can memorize and say individual words and whole phrases. Life expectancy 30-50 years. In zoos and with aviaries, sometimes multiply, a case of hybridization with red Ara is known, which proves the close relationship of these types.
